Queen Latifah

Dana Elaine Owens better known as Queen Latifah is an American performer and actress. Her work as Queen Latifah in film, television and in music has earned many accolades. They include the Golden Globe Award two Screen Actors Guild Awards Two Image Awards A Grammy Award In addition, she has six Grammy Nominations Emmy Award Nomination and an Academy Award. Queen Latifah was born and was raised in Newark New Jersey the daughter of Rita teacher who taught in Irvington High School and Lancelot Owens, Jr. a police officer. Her parents divorced in the year Latifah was ten years old. Latifah was raised in the Baptist faith and attended Catholic school at Newark New Jersey. Latifah refers to an Arabic word that means "delicate and kind". The cousin she had bestowed it on her when she was eight. Always tall, the 5'10 tall Latifah was a forward for her high school basketball team. The song she performed was "Home" from The Wiz during a play at her highschool. Latifah started to beatbox for the group known as Ladies Fresh. Latifah was a part of with the Flavor Unit in its original form, which consisted of a group of MCs led by producer DJ Mark The 45 King. Mark James, aka DJ Mark the45 King recorded the rap of Queen Latifah, aka Princess of the Posse. He sent the recording to Yo! MTV Raps which is hosted by Freddy. The single caught the eye to Tommy Boy Music employee Dante Ross who was signed by Latifah and, in 1988, released her debut track Wrath of My Madness.
