Nancy Wilson and Maisie Richardson

The jazz musician Nancy Wilson a three-time Grammy Award winner was born February 20, 1937, in Chillicothe Ohio to iron-worker Olden Wilson, and former Lillian Ryan who worked as a housekeeper. Nancy was the youngest out of 6 siblings. The father of Nancy was a music lover and played records with his children at home. This had a great influence upon her growing up. As a young girl she had already developed an idea of her identity and what she wanted to do. The church choir was instrumental in developing this talent. When she won a talent contest on television at the age of 15, she started to appear regularly on Skyline Melodies, while still in highschool. When she was 15, Nancy began her professional career at nightclubs. Nancy was 17 at the time she completed high school. After enrolling at Ohio Central State College - now Central State University - for one semester, Nancy went on to become professional performers. The first album she recorded was with Rusty's Carolyn Club Big Band in 1956. The group performed from 1956 until 1958. Nancy's first Dot Records recording was made when she was a member of the big band of the Carolyn Club. Cannonball addederley recommended that she relocate to New York for her career, and in 1959 she moved to The Big Town. In less than a month, she was singing in The Blue Morocco Night Club situated on Boston Road near The Bronx. Adderley's representative saw her singing and instantly agreed to sign her. The contract was signed by Capitol Records in the year 1960. In 1960, she released her first single. Guess who? Capitol released 5 Nancy Wilson Albums in 2 years. Adderley helped her move away from R&B and to focus on music that was more jazz-based and torch songs. Their 1962 collaboration Nancy Wilson and Cannonball Adderley led her to fame as she released her biggest hit Tell Me the Truth in 1963. In the year following, this led to her getting booked in New York's Coconut Grove - the top nightclub in America.
