Jazz musician Nancy Wilson a three-time Grammy Award winner was born the 20th of February 1937 in Ohio, Chillicothe. She was the daughter of iron worker Olden Wilson, and former Lillian Ryan who worked as domestic helper. Nancy is the youngest among six children. Her father was a musician and would play records at home. This was a major influence upon her growing up. At just 4 years old, she knew she would be a singer. Her talent developed by her involvement in the choir at church. She was a finalist on a talent show on TV in her 15th year and then began performing regularly on the tv series Skyline Melodies while still in high school. She began working in nightclubs at the at the same time. Nancy was 17 when she had graduated high school, and then matriculated at Ohio Central State College (now Central State University) for a year before quitting to pursue a career as a musician. In 1956 she made her first album with Rusty's Carolyn Club Big Band. They toured together between 1956 and 1958. Nancy recorded her first record on Dot Records while in the band. Cannonball suggested that she relocate to New York and go to The Big Town to further her singing career. Within a month she got an offer to sing in The Blue Morocco Night Club situated on Boston Road in The Bronx where Adderley's agent heard her voice and agreed to sign her. She made her recording debut in 1960 by releasing the single "Girls" after she signed a deal with Capitol Records. Guess Who You Saw Today. Capitol released five Nancy Wilson records in just two years. With the help of Adderley's influence she shifted her focus her focus from R&B into jazz. The 1962 group collaboration of Nancy Wilson and Cannonball Adderley helped propel her to fame as she released her biggest smash Tell Me the Truth in 1963. This brought her a gig at the New York's Coconut Grove the premier night club in America that year, and she quickly became a legend.
